The best time to visit Tambopata is during the dry season (approximately May to October): less rain, firmer trails, and excellent wildlife viewing; warm days (28–32°C) and cool nights. During the rainy season (November to April), the forest is greener, the rivers rise, and heavy downpours are possible; there is more mud and mosquitoes, but less dust and fewer visitors. The tour operates year-round, and each season offers advantages for nature tourism. Book in advance during peak season (July–September). Bring a rain poncho, insect repellent, and sunscreen. The Amazonian weather is changeable; itineraries may be adjusted for safety reasons.

The typical itinerary begins in Puerto Maldonado: transfer to the dock and boat trip on the Madre de Dios/Tambopata River to the lodge. In the afternoon, an interpretive walk through primary/secondary rainforest to identify flora and fauna. At night, a boat safari to see caimans. At dawn, a visit to a lake such as Sandoval or a macaw clay lick for birdwatching. Optional activities include a canopy walk or observation tower, kayaking, artisanal fishing, a visit to a local farm, and a night walk to spot insects, frogs, and mammals. Common durations are 3 days/2 nights or 4 days/3 nights. Activities depend on the weather, river levels, and the program confirmed by the tour operator.

For this excursion in the Peruvian Amazon, bring a small waterproof backpack and a dry bag, lightweight, quick-drying clothing, long-sleeved shirts, long pants, a hat, a poncho, knee-high socks, and closed-toe shoes (many lodges lend rubber boots). Pack insect repellent with DEET or icaridin, sunscreen, sunglasses, a water bottle, a headlamp with batteries, a camera, and binoculars. Pack a personal first-aid kit with medications, antihistamines, and rehydration salts; inform the lodge of any allergies or dietary restrictions. A yellow fever vaccination and up-to-date tetanus shots are recommended; consult your doctor about malaria based on your individual needs. Purchase travel insurance with medical and evacuation coverage. Cell phone service, electricity, and Wi-Fi may be limited at the lodge.

To book a tour to Tambopata, you'll typically need to confirm availability, provide flight details, and pay a deposit (e.g., 30–50%) to secure your spot; the balance is due before departure. Cancellation and change policies vary by operator and are generally tiered based on advance booking, with penalties for no-shows. Rescheduling due to weather or force majeure may be offered, subject to terms and conditions. Please inform us in advance of any dietary requirements and children's ages; some tours have minimum passenger requirements. You'll receive a voucher and briefing with schedules, meeting point, and baggage allowance. For a smooth experience, please review your travel insurance's payment policy, refund terms, and coverage before purchasing.
