Our adventure begins as we leave Huaraz behind, venturing into the enchanting southern region of the Callejón de Huaylas. Our journey's first highlight is Querococha Lagoon, a true gem of the Cordillera Blanca that captivates with its breathtaking beauty.
This mesmerizing lagoon, with its rich green waters, is situated 57 kilometers southwest of Huaraz, resting at an elevation of 3,972 meters above sea level. From this vantage point, you can marvel at an astounding geological formation resembling the map of Peru—a sight that is not to be missed!
As we continue onward, we will traverse the Cahuish Tunnel, the highest elevation on our route at 4,516 meters above sea level, leading us into the intriguing Callejón de Conchucos. Journeying through picturesque villages, we proceed to our next destination: the historic town of Chavín.
In Chavín, you will have the opportunity to explore the famed Chavín de Huántar Archaeological Complex, renowned for its mysterious underground galleries, distinct tenon heads, the impressive Monolithic Lanzón, and iconic artifacts like the Tello Obelisk and the Raimondi Stela.
Situated at 3,180 meters above sea level, the Chavín archaeological site is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. As a pivotal religious and cultural hub for the Chavín civilization (900-200 BC), it is nestled amidst the awe-inspiring Andes and promises a unique experience for enthusiasts of archaeology, history, and pre-Inca cultural heritage.
For a midday respite, you can savor a delectable lunch at a charming local restaurant before we proceed to our next stop: the National Museum of Chavín. This museum features an extraordinary collection of ceramics, original artifacts such as the Tello Obelisk, and other treasures that reveal the mysteries of this captivating pre-Inca culture.
Concluding our journey, we will make our way back to the city of Huaraz.
