Tour Description

DAY 1: AREQUIPA - COLCA VALLEY

Our journey kicks off in the morning in the city of Arequipa as we set off on an exhilarating 160 km drive to the city of Chivay.

Along the way, we'll pass through the enchanting village of Yura, renowned for its streets and squares that are recognized as historical monuments.

We will then proceed through the scenic Pampa de Arrieros and Pampa Cañahuas, which house the Salinas and Aguada Blanca National Reserve in the Colca Canyon. Here, you can witness the magnificent vicuñas roaming freely, offering a perfect opportunity to appreciate the beauty of these creatures against the backdrop of the stunning landscape.

We'll take a short break in Patahuasi to savor a revitalizing coca tea, a traditional Andean hot beverage that aids in acclimatizing to altitude. During our brief pause at the Tocra wetlands, you'll also have the chance to admire exquisite birds, including flamingos. Continuing our route, we'll pass by the crater of the Chucura volcano and pause at an impressive volcano viewpoint.

Throughout the day, we will explore picturesque villages and enjoy breathtaking views of the volcanoes from a lookout point, engaging in a cultural tour through the villages of the Colca Valley.

Upon reaching Chivay, you'll have some free time to enjoy lunch (optional). We will then transfer you to your hotel for a brief rest.

Later, we will delve into the town of Chivay and its bustling market, immersing ourselves in the rich Andean culture high in the Colca Canyon. Our day will end with a visit to the La Calera hot springs.

In the evening, we will escort you back to your hotel in Chivay, Yanque, or Coporaque, depending on where your accommodation is located.

DAY 2: CONDOR CROSS - AREQUIPA

Begin your day early with a delightful breakfast before setting out to the renowned Cruz del Cóndor viewpoint. Arriving just in time to behold the canyon's stunning depth, we might be fortunate enough to spot the majestic condors in the Colca Canyon.

These awe-inspiring birds of prey are among the largest globally, and observing them glide gracefully over the canyon and valley is an unforgettable experience.

As we make our way back to Chivay, we'll visit the traditional village of Pinchollo and the Antahuilque viewpoint, where you can marvel at the ancient terraces constructed 1,500 years ago by the Collagua culture, predating the Incas.

Our exploration continues with a visit to Maca, a charming Andean community that endured an earthquake in November 1991, and the town of Yanque, celebrated for having the most beautiful church in the valley. We'll return to Chivay, allowing you some time for lunch (optional).

Finally, we will head back to Arequipa and transfer you to your hotel, wrapping up an extraordinary experience in the Colca Valley.

If you opt for the transfer to Puno, after your visit to the Colca Valley, enjoy a scenic 320 km journey through captivating landscapes. We will travel through several quaint Andean villages before arriving in Puno, where we will escort you to your hotel to continue your exciting adventure.

The Colca Canyon tour is suitable for most travelers with a basic level of fitness. Activities range from low to moderate in intensity, with short walks to scenic viewpoints. The main factor is the altitude: you'll reach approximately 4,900–4,910 meters above sea level in Patapampa and spend the night at around 3,600–3,650 meters in Chivay/Yanque. To avoid altitude sickness (soroche), it's recommended to acclimatize for 24–48 hours in Arequipa, stay hydrated, drink coca or muña tea, eat light meals, and avoid alcohol. If you have heart or respiratory conditions, consult your doctor. Vehicles usually carry oxygen, and the guide offers basic assistance. Purchase travel insurance.

The climate in the Colca Valley features a wide temperature range: sunny days and cold nights. During the dry season (April–November), skies are clear; during the rainy season (December–March), clouds and precipitation are possible. Pack layers of clothing (thermal base layer, fleece, and windbreaker), a hat and gloves, hiking boots, high SPF sunscreen (SPF 50), sunglasses, lip balm, a reusable water bottle, and snacks. Bring a swimsuit, sandals, and a towel for the hot springs. Carry cash for the Colca Tourist Ticket, hot spring entrance fees, and local purchases, as well as your ID/passport and camera. A light daypack will make hiking and photo stops easier.

The price of the classic Colca Canyon tour varies depending on the season, hotel category, and whether it's a shared or private service. The Colca Tourist Ticket (BTC) and entrance fees to the hot springs are generally not included and must be paid in cash upon arrival. To book, choose your date, the number of travelers, and your accommodation type; you will receive a confirmation and an electronic voucher. Standard payment methods are accepted (credit/debit card and online platforms). Check availability in advance during peak season.
