Frequently Asked Questions

The Pacaya Samiria Amazon Lodge excursion typically includes river boat transfers from the embarkation area, accommodation in an eco-lodge in the Peruvian rainforest, full board (breakfast, lunch, and dinner), a bilingual naturalist guide, and guided activities as per the itinerary: boat trips, hikes, wildlife and bird watching, and piranha fishing. Basic safety equipment is usually provided, and boots and ponchos may be available depending on availability. Flights to Iquitos, alcoholic beverages, tips, personal expenses, insurance, and entrance fees to the National Reserve (if applicable) are not usually included. Please review the Pacaya Samiria tour itinerary and current rates to confirm services, price per person, and conditions.

Most travelers fly to Iquitos, Peru, from Lima or other cities. From Iquitos, the tour operator coordinates airport or hotel pickup at a set time and road transfer to the dock, followed by a river cruise to the lodge in the Amazon. Round-trip transfers are usually included in the tour package. We recommend arriving in Iquitos well in advance to avoid delays due to weather or flight changes and sharing your arrival details to coordinate schedules. Keep your ID/passport handy. The total journey time varies depending on the river level and weather conditions.

The Pacaya Samiria Amazon Lodge tour operates year-round. From December to May (high water), the flooded forests make navigation and canoe access easier; however, there is more rain and mosquitoes. From June to October (low water), beaches and trails emerge; wildlife may congregate in oxbow lakes and along riverbanks. The climate is warm and humid: 24–32°C with high humidity deep in the Amazon rainforest. Pack a lightweight raincoat, insect repellent, sunscreen, and quick-drying clothing. If you are traveling during peak tourist season (July-August and holidays), book in advance. Wildlife viewing is good in both seasons, with different experiences depending on the river level.

The typical itinerary in Pacaya Samiria includes sunrise/sunset boat trips, interpretive hikes through the rainforest, birdwatching, monkey and pink river dolphin sightings, nighttime excursions to observe caimans and insects, piranha fishing, and navigating through lakes and flooded forests. Some tours visit local communities with a focus on responsible tourism. The difficulty level ranges from easy to moderate: expect heat, humidity, mud, and possible rain. This trip is suitable for families and solo travelers with basic fitness. Closed-toe, non-slip shoes, constant hydration, and following the instructions of the bilingual guide are recommended. Activities may vary depending on weather, river levels, and the season in the Peruvian Amazon.

For this excursion in the Peruvian Amazon, pack lightweight, quick-drying clothing, long-sleeved shirts, convertible pants, a raincoat, hat, sunglasses, boots or closed-toe shoes, sandals for the lodge, a swimsuit, a compact towel, a headlamp, batteries/power bank, a dry bag, and a reusable water bottle. Essential items include insect repellent with DEET or icaridin, sunscreen, a personal first-aid kit, and any medications. A yellow fever vaccination and up-to-date tetanus vaccination are recommended; consult your doctor about malaria prophylaxis and travel insurance. Inform the tour operator of any allergies or dietary restrictions. The operator usually provides life jackets and a first-aid kit; always follow the guide's instructions and do not feed the wildlife.
