Tour Description

DAY 1

Upon your arrival at the Iquitos airport, we will be there to greet you and provide a road transfer to the Nauta port, approximately a 1.5-hour journey from the city. We'll embark on boats, and during the rainy season, we have the chance to visit Casual Fundo as we travel downstream. Once we arrive at the Pacaya Samiria Lodge, you will be welcomed by a member of the KukamaKukamiria culture and treated to a refreshing natural fruit juice.

The Pacaya Samiria Amazon Lodge is nestled in the heart of the Peruvian jungle, situated on the left bank of the Marañon River, southwest of Iquitos. This area is part of the largest floodplain forest in the Amazon, the Pacaya Samiria Reserve, home to key wildlife species such as pink dolphins, cougars, monkeys, and a rich variety of birds and reptiles, including alligators and turtles. The rivers also teem with diverse fish species.

After lunch, we'll spend an enjoyable afternoon listening to myths and tales about the enigmatic Amazon rainforest. Following this, embark on a night tour around the lodge to spot spiders, snakes, frogs, and a wide array of nocturnal insects. Dinner will be served at the lodge, where we will also spend the night.

DAY 2

Following a well-earned breakfast, we'll embark on a walking tour through the jungle, marveling at the incredible diversity of flora and fauna and discovering the potent medicinal plants prevalent in this area. This region boasts over 900 types of wildflowers and delectable tropical fruits such as Camu Camu, Aguaje, and Ají Charapita. We'll return to the lodge for a traditional local lunch.

In the afternoon, we'll visit the Pacaya Samiria National Reserve, famously dubbed the "Jungle of Mirrors." This part of the Amazon jungle was designated a protected natural area in 1982 to safeguard its vast array of exotic fauna and flora, natural resources, and endangered species like the black lizard and the giant otter.

Our jungle exploration continues by boat to observe the stunning pink dolphins and sloths. You'll also have the chance to fish for piranhas, after which we will return to the lodge. Dinner and overnight stay are included.

DAY 3

After breakfast, our final day begins with a journey to the Marañon River and Cocha Shiriyacu (depending on the season and fishing conditions). We will visit the San Jorge community and their craft center, where you'll have the opportunity to purchase beautiful handmade crafts. Following this, we will head back to the lodge to enjoy lunch.

At the designated time, we will return to the city of Iquitos.

Programs to the Pacaya Samiria lodge typically last between 3 and 5 days, ideal for an immersive ecotourism experience. The itinerary usually combines navigating rivers and lakes, interpretive hikes in the rainforest, wildlife viewing (pink dolphins, birds, monkeys), a night safari to observe caimans and insects, and visits to riverside communities. It may also include recreational piranha fishing and the observation of medicinal plants. Schedules depend on the season and river levels. Review the detailed daily itinerary before booking to learn about distances, boat transfer times, and the pace of each activity.

The Peruvian Amazon is hot and humid year-round (24–32 °C). In Pacaya Samiria National Park, there are two main seasons: the high-water season (approximately November–May), with high rivers, easier navigation, and access to flooded lakes; and the low-water season (June–October), with sandy beaches, more hiking opportunities, and better visibility of wildlife along the riverbanks. Both seasons offer excellent opportunities for nature photography. Rain is frequent, so pack a raincoat. If you're looking for fewer tourists, avoid holidays and peak vacation periods. Book well in advance during peak season. Always check the forecast and river conditions before your trip to adjust your itinerary.

For the jungle lodge tour, pack lightweight, quick-drying clothing, long-sleeved shirts and pants, a raincoat, closed-toe boots and sandals, a wide-brimmed hat, insect repellent (DEET or icaridin), sunscreen, sunglasses, a headlamp, a water bottle, a dry bag, and a camera. Bring personal medications and a small first-aid kit. A passport and cash in soles are useful in remote areas. A yellow fever vaccination and up-to-date tetanus and hepatitis A vaccinations are recommended; consult your doctor about malaria prophylaxis. Purchase travel insurance with medical and evacuation coverage. Always follow the instructions of the local guide.

Most tours to Pacaya Samiria depart from Iquitos, with a road transfer to Nauta (approximately 1.5–2 hours) followed by a boat trip to the lodge within or near the Pacaya Samiria National Reserve. Arrive in Iquitos by plane from Lima or other cities. Check pick-up times, baggage limits, and return times to coordinate your flights. To book, confirm availability in advance; many lodges have limited spaces. Inquire about payment, rescheduling, and cancellation policies, as well as any high-season surcharges. Read the terms and conditions and any included insurance to avoid surprises and protect your investment.
