Tour Description

DAY 1

Your extraordinary journey begins bright and early as we depart from the city of Cusco. After picking you up from your hotel, we'll travel through charming towns until we reach the picturesque village of Paucartambo.

Located 68 miles from Cusco at an altitude of 2,906 meters, Paucartambo is renowned for hosting one of the region's most significant celebrations, the Festival of Virgen del Carmen.

The tour to Manu continues as we drive through the scenic route, stopping for lunch, and proceed to the Cloud Forest. This area is home to splendid wildlife including the Spectacled Bear and the Cock of the Rock. Here, you'll encounter diverse species of plants and flowers such as orchids and bromeliads.

Upon arrival at the lodge, situated in the Manu cultural zone at 1,700 meters, you can relax. Around the lodge, there are trails designed for exploring this segment of the Amazon rainforest. The trail circuit spans about 5 kilometers, and it's essential to be accompanied by a tour guide.

A delightful dinner awaits you.

DAY 2

At sunrise, we'll embark on a boat ride to spot the renowned Cock of the Rock, Peru's national bird, known for its vibrant plumage.

Following breakfast, we'll proceed to the quaint town of Pilcopata, located at 589 meters above sea level. Nestled between Cusco and Madre de Dios, the Manu National Park encompasses the cultural, reserved, and protected zones.

If you're up for an adventure, enjoy a one-hour Rafting experience along the thrilling Koñeq and Madre de Dios rivers, navigating class I and II rapids. Relish the scenery and take a dip in the river to conclude this exhilarating activity.

Later, we'll head to Atalaya Port to board a boat and discover the incredible species of birds, eventually arriving at the lodge where we'll spend the next three nights amidst the Peruvian jungle.

The lodge features a trail network that you can explore anytime with a tour guide. This day includes lunch and dinner.

DAY 3

In the early hours, we'll embark on a walking tour to observe the wildlife surrounding the lodge and gain insights into the local flora and fauna from our knowledgeable guide.

Post-breakfast, the tour continues with a boat ride across the river, followed by a 30-minute walk to explore diverse plant species, including medicinal plants and various tropical fruits.

Upon reaching the Machuwasi lagoon, we'll paddle in canoes to spot species of mammals in their natural habitat. The jungle is teeming with species of butterflies, reptiles, and giant otters.

We'll undertake a night tour near the lodge to seek out insects and nocturnal creatures. All meals are included today.

DAY 4

Today's highlight is a special tour exploring the jungle on a morning walk to admire a magnificent kapok tree, known for its stunning roots. Revel in the lush wild vegetation that envelops you.

Manu National Park is a protected natural area recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987.

We'll return to the lodge for breakfast before embarking on a boat journey along the Madre de Dios river to the Aguas Calientes pools, a splendid tour lasting about an hour and a half.

Take a refreshing dip in the river while taking in the breathtaking Peruvian jungle and savoring a delightful lunch.

Back at the lodge, relax before enjoying a delicious dinner. Drift off to sleep to the sounds of insects, animals, and birds—a unique experience not to be missed.

DAY 5

The final day begins with a morning visit to a macaw clay lick, a clay wall providing nutritional benefits for various birds like the blue-headed parrot, Macarano macaw, and white-eyed parakeet.

Frequently Asked Questions

The tour to the Manu Biosphere Reserve typically includes: land and river transfers as per the itinerary (often from Cusco), accommodation in an Amazonian lodge or hostels with mosquito nets, full board (breakfast, lunch, and dinner), boiled/filtered water, a bilingual naturalist guide, permits/entrance fees to protected areas, and ecotourism activities such as interpretive hikes, boat trips, wildlife and bird watching, and nighttime excursions. Rubber boots, life jackets, and a safety briefing are usually provided. Flights, travel insurance, bottled drinks, and tips are generally not included. Please review the tour package details before booking.

The typical Manu tour itinerary combines Andean road travel and high jungle journeys with motorized boat trips on the Alto Madre de Dios River or its tributaries. It usually departs from Cusco, descends into the cloud forest for bird and monkey watching, and continues into the low jungle where overnight stays are in Amazonian lodges. The days include early mornings for wildlife viewing, hikes along trails, and boat time. The duration varies from 3 to 8 days depending on the tour package; the longer the tour, the greater the likelihood of seeing biodiversity. The return trip is made along the same route or a combination of sections. Please confirm distances and times with the tour operator.

The best time to visit the Manu Biosphere Reserve is usually during the dry season, from May to October, with less rain, easier trails, and fewer mosquitoes. The rainy season (November to April) offers lusher rainforest and fuller rivers, but may cause delays due to heavy rainfall. The climate is tropical: warm days (18–32°C) and high humidity; nights can be cool in the cloud forest. During peak season (June–August), it's advisable to book in advance. Always carry a raincoat: the weather in the Peruvian Amazon can change rapidly. Wildlife is visible year-round, with variations depending on the species.

For this excursion to the Peruvian Amazon, pack lightweight, quick-drying clothing, long-sleeved shirts, sturdy pants, a thermal layer for the cloud forest, a poncho or waterproof jacket, trekking boots, and sandals. Add a hat, sunglasses, a headlamp, binoculars, dry bags, a camera case, and a reusable water bottle. Essentials include insect repellent (DEET/icaridin), high SPF sunscreen, a personal first-aid kit, and any medications. Carry documents and cash in soles in a waterproof bag. For health, vaccinations against yellow fever (10 days prior to departure), tetanus, and hepatitis A are recommended; inquire about malaria prophylaxis. If arriving via Cusco, consider altitude sickness prevention.

The price of a tour to Manu depends on the duration (3–8 days), season, lodge type, and group size. Tour packages typically include transportation, a naturalist guide, meals, and entrance fees; please verify exactly what is included. A 30–50% deposit is usually required to book, with the balance due before departure. Spaces are limited by Manu National Park regulations, so it's advisable to book 2–3 months in advance during peak season. Cancellation policies vary: partial refunds with advance notice and penalties closer to the departure date. Payments are accepted by credit card or bank transfer. Travel insurance is recommended.
