DAY 1

We will pick you up from your hotel in the heart of Arequipa city, and our transportation will take us along the Cabrerías route to the starting point of our Misti Volcano ascent, situated at an altitude of 4,100 meters above sea level.

Take in the breathtaking scenery of the Arequipa valley, encircled by majestic mountains and volcanoes. Our ascent of Misti Volcano begins with a 6-hour trek, during which we will encounter native wildlife and vegetation, including cacti and various bird species. We will also enjoy a box lunch during our hike.

Misti Volcano is positioned 20 kilometers northeast of Arequipa city, along the Chili River, reaching an elevation of 5,820 meters above sea level. Its name derives from the Quechua language, signifying "white-skinned man." Recognized as an active volcano, it is part of the Salinas and Aguada Blanca National Reserve.

We will arrive at the Base Camp, located at 4,800 meters above sea level, where we will set up camp and enjoy a rejuvenating dinner.

DAY 2

Today, we will commence early, and after breakfast, we will proceed with the volcano ascent in a 6-hour trek. We aim to reach the summit before noon, where you can enjoy stunning views of the volcano's crater.

Take in the awe-inspiring vistas of the Andes mountain range, along with the Chachani and Pichu Pichu volcanoes, also visible from the city of Arequipa. There will be time to capture photographs.

This volcano has undergone more than 10 eruptions in recent history, the last of which occurred in the 15th century during the Inca era.

Subsequently, we will begin our descent back to Base Camp. After a brief rest, we will continue hiking for another 2 hours to reach our transport, which will take us back to Arequipa city.

Frequently Asked Questions

The trek to Misti Volcano (5822 m a.s.l.) is of moderate to high difficulty. It's not usually technical, but the altitude, sustained inclines, and sections of volcanic sand make it challenging. You'll hike between 6 and 8 hours per day, with sub-zero temperatures and wind near the summit. Good physical condition, prior experience in high-altitude trekking, and a minimum of 2 to 3 days of acclimatization in Arequipa are recommended. Staying hydrated, maintaining a steady pace, and listening to the certified mountain guide to manage altitude sickness are crucial. If you have a pre-existing medical condition, consult a doctor beforehand.

Typically, the tour package includes round-trip transportation from Arequipa, a certified bilingual mountain guide, shared camping equipment (tent and sleeping mats), cooking utensils, meals en route, and safety equipment (first-aid kit, oxygen, and communication device). Permits or entrance fees are usually included when applicable. Personal trekking equipment (boots, layers of clothing, backpack) and accessories such as sleeping bags or trekking poles may not be included and can be rented. Services may vary depending on the operator and the season. To avoid surprises, please verify the final details of inclusions, exclusions, and additional costs before booking your adventure tour.

For the ascent of Misti, bring mid-to-high trekking boots, technical socks, a thermal base layer, a fleece, a waterproof and windproof jacket, hiking pants, a warm hat, and a buff. Add gloves, UV 3 or 4 sunglasses, sunscreen and lip balm, a headlamp with batteries, a personal first-aid kit, and toiletries. Use a 30- to 40-liter backpack with a hydration bladder or 2- to 3-liter bottles, energy snacks, and easily transportable wraps. Consider trekking poles. If not already included, bring a -5 to -10°C sleeping bag. Protect your equipment and documents in waterproof bags.

The classic tour is 2 days and 1 night. Day 1: Departure from Arequipa, transfer to the starting point, and a 4- to 6-hour ascent to base camp (approximately 4,500 to 4,700 m), with views of the Aguada Blanca Reserve. Day 2: Early morning departure for the summit; a 5- to 7-hour hike over sandy and rocky slopes, reaching the crater of Misti Volcano at dawn. After panoramic photos of the Chachani and Ampato volcanoes, a 3- to 4-hour descent to base camp and return to Arequipa in the afternoon. Times and routes may vary depending on weather and conditions.

The best time to climb Misti Volcano is during the dry season, from May to November (peak between June and September), with clear skies and a lower probability of precipitation, ideal for high-altitude hiking. During the rainy season (approximately December to March), cloud cover, storms, and unstable ground increase; some tours may be rescheduled. The high-altitude climate features a wide temperature range: nights between -5 and -10 °C, wind at the summit, and intense UV radiation. It is recommended to start very early to take advantage of the morning's stability, wear layers of clothing, and check the forecast. Crampons may be required after occasional snowfall.
