Tour Description
Begin your day with a delightful breakfast at your hotel in the city or bay of Puno. Afterward, you will be transferred to the lakeside port, where you will board either a fast or regular boat, depending on your choice, to visit the floating islands of the Uros.
These islands are located 7 kilometers northwest of the city of Puno. The Uros are an ancient community living on a series of man-made islands constructed from totora reeds, which thrive in the lake.
The creation of the Uros islands involves weaving totora reeds into dense mats, forming a natural foundation. On this layer, they build their homes, also from totora, and cook outside to reduce the risk of fires.
Lake Titicaca straddles the border between Peru and Bolivia at an elevation of 3,812 meters above sea level, in the Andean Altiplano or Collao Plateau. It holds the distinction of being the highest navigable lake in the world.
While on the floating island, you'll have the opportunity to interact with the locals who will share their traditions and lifestyle. Over 200 families reside in this high-altitude region, speaking Aymara in addition to Spanish.
For those on the half-day tour, this marks the conclusion of your visit to the Uros Islands.
For the full-day tour participants, we'll embark on a one and a half hour boat ride to the island of Taquile. This island, unlike the others, is Quechua-speaking and was once part of the Inca Empire, with visible remnants of that era in its architecture.
Taquile is the second largest island on Lake Titicaca, spanning 5.5 kilometers. Its textile art is exquisite and recognized as a UNESCO heritage. The island's highest point reaches 4,050 meters above sea level.
This destination offers an ideal setting for experiential tourism, allowing you to immerse yourself in the local culture. The inhabitants are welcoming and engage in tourism, fishing, and agriculture as their main economic activities.
Later, savor a delicious typical Andean meal before we begin our return journey to the port of Puno, where your transportation will be ready to take you back to your hotel.
