Tour Description
We will pick you up from your hotel in Puno to begin our journey to the Sillustani Puno archaeological site. This remarkable complex is perched atop a peninsula alongside Lake Umayo, approximately 22.3 miles from Puno and near Lake Titicaca.
This location boasts around 90 funerary towers constructed by the Kolla culture, an Aymara community that thrived before the rise of the Inca Empire. Numerous mummies have been discovered within these towers, including those of significant individuals such as priests, leaders, and nobles. These individuals were mummified and arranged in a fetal position, accompanied by their possessions, including gold, silver, and ceramics.
The preservation of these burial towers is remarkable, each constructed with stones of various shapes that fit together seamlessly. The architecture and engineering employed by the Kolla culture were highly advanced for their era. Some towers reach up to 12 meters in height, with the Lagarto Chullpa being the tallest and most iconic.
The Sillustani tour also includes a visit to a local family who raise Alpacas. They will demonstrate their traditional methods of food preparation, their way of life, weaving techniques, and how they preserve ancestral customs.
At the conclusion of the tour, you will be returned to your hotel, or you have the option to choose the tour with a transfer to Juliaca airport (optional).
