Tour Description

DAY 1

In the early morning, we'll collect you from your hotel in Puno to head to the lake port, where we'll board a regular boat to kick off our journey to the Uros Floating Islands. These remarkable islands, crafted by hand, are constructed from totora reeds, with approximately 80 such islands dotting the area.

The Uros islands are ingeniously built by weaving the totora reeds. The locals also use this material to construct their homes and cook outdoors to prevent fires. You'll have the chance to meet the welcoming Uros people, learning about their traditions and way of life.

The Titicaca tour continues with a boat ride to Amantani Island, navigating the vast Lake Titicaca, known as the highest navigable lake in the world at an elevation of 3,812 meters above sea level, and ranking as the second largest lake in South America.

Upon arrival, the amiable community will greet us warmly. The island is home to 800 families, and it boasts significant ceremonial centers and shamans who predict the future using coca leaves. We will enjoy lunch with the locals to gain deeper insight into their lifestyle.

Next, we'll climb to Pacha Tata (4,100 meters above sea level), where the most significant mystical ceremonial center of Lake Titicaca is situated, to witness a stunning sunset.

Savor a delightful dinner with the local people, and if you wish, join in their traditional activities.

You'll spend the night in a cozy family home.

DAY 2

Following a traditional Andean breakfast, we'll set sail to Taquile Island, located 28 miles from Amantaní Island. Taquile has an elevation of 3,950 meters above sea level, with its highest point reaching 4,050 meters.

On this island, you will be treated to breathtaking views of the lake and its landscapes, framed by the Andes mountains and a vibrant blue sky. Here, you can admire the stunning flora, including the Cantuta flower and the medicinal Muña plant, known for its healing properties, often used in infusions. The fauna includes farm animals like cows, rams, and chickens.

We'll enjoy a special performance by the local community, featuring dances, music, and a photo session with traditional costumes, all while you enjoy lunch.

Taquile Island is renowned for its skilled artisans. The textile art is truly impressive, employing ancient and organic techniques, such as natural dyeing with vegetable sources.

Finally, we'll board the boat back to the lake port of Puno city and then transfer you back to your hotel.

Frequently Asked Questions

The classic tour to the Titicaca Islands of Uros, Amantaní, and Taquile lasts 2 days/1 night and begins in Puno. In the morning, you'll travel by tourist boat to the floating islands of the Uros people to learn about their culture and the traditional totora reed construction. The tour then continues to Amantaní, where you'll be welcomed by a local family. In the afternoon, you'll typically hike to the Pachamama or Pachatata viewpoint to watch the sunset over Lake Titicaca. The following day, after breakfast, you'll visit Taquile, exploring its terraces and main square, and enjoy lunch (optional) before returning to Puno in the afternoon.

Generally, the tour includes: navigation in an authorized boat, a bilingual tour guide (Spanish/English), life jackets, visits to Uros, Amantaní, and Taquile islands, accommodation in a family home on Amantaní (community-based rural tourism), and basic meals on the island (dinner and breakfast). It usually includes pick-up from centrally located hotels in Puno and payment of community entrance fees. Typically not included are: lunch on Taquile (depending on the itinerary), drinks, snacks, tips, handicraft purchases, personal expenses, travel insurance, and transfers outside the city limits. Some agencies may charge port fees or supplements for private rooms. Always check the "Includes/Does Not Include" details before booking.

The high-altitude climate around Lake Titicaca is dry and sunny during the day, cold at night, and has very high UV radiation. During the dry season (May to October), skies are clear; during the rainy season (November to March), showers and winds are possible. Pack layers of clothing: a thermal base layer, fleece, windbreaker, and waterproof jacket; a hat, gloves, and scarf for the evenings. Essentials include sunscreen, sunglasses, a hat, a reusable water bottle, cash in soles, a headlamp, a power bank, a personal first-aid kit, and comfortable walking shoes. Add a rain poncho, snacks, and a camera cover. Pack light and avoid single-use plastics.

Lake Titicaca is at approximately 3,812 meters above sea level, and Amantaní and Taquile reach almost 4,000 meters. The trek involves moderate hiking on trails and staircases, so a basic level of fitness is recommended. To prevent altitude sickness (soroche): acclimatize for 1–2 nights in Puno, stay well hydrated, avoid alcohol and heavy meals, walk at a slow pace, and protect yourself from the sun. Coca tea and rest are helpful. If you have a history of heart or respiratory problems, or are pregnant, consult your doctor and consider travel insurance. Listen to your local guide and don't overexert yourself during the ascents.

Accommodation in Amantaní is in local family homes (homestays), simple but clean, with warm beds and friendly service. Electricity is often limited, cell phone service is intermittent, water is cold, and bathrooms are shared; Wi-Fi is not usually available. The experiential tourism experience includes a home-cooked dinner, interaction with the Quechua/Aymara community, traditional music and dances, and the opportunity to wear traditional clothing for a cultural gathering. Meals are simple and fresh (quinoa, potatoes, trout). If you have a special diet, please inform us when booking. Purchase handicrafts directly from the artisans and ask permission before taking photos: cultural respect is an integral part of the journey.
