Tour Description

DAY 1: ARRIVAL IN IQUITOS
Bright and early, we will collect you from the Iquitos airport or your centrally located hotel in the city. Our transport will take you to the Nauta port, a scenic two-hour drive from Iquitos. From there, we will embark on a one-hour boat ride to a stunning lodge nestled within the Tamshiyacu-Tahuayo Reserve, situated on the banks of the Yanayacu River.

This reserve is part of the Loreto region, in proximity to the Pacaya Samiria National Reserve. Once you've settled into the eco-lodge, we'll savor a buffet lunch crafted from fresh, organic local ingredients.

Your jungle adventure kicks off with a meeting with the world’s tiniest monkey, the Pygmy Marmoset, also known as the "Mono Leoncito." We will explore the lodge’s botanical garden to admire various medicinal plants and gain insights into composting.

Dinner will be served at the lodge, followed by an exhilarating nighttime boat excursion as we search for caimans, nocturnal mammals, and birds.

DAY 2: DISCOVERING THE AMAZON RAINFOREST
After a sumptuous breakfast, we will set off on a boat exploration along the Amazon River, where you'll have the chance to refresh with a swim. We will also be on the lookout for the renowned pink and gray river dolphins, frequently seen in this region.

During our journey, you will witness the world’s largest aquatic plant, the Victoria Regia, and observe beautiful iguanas in their natural surroundings. By midday, we will return to the lodge to enjoy a buffet that features both local and international dishes.

In the afternoon, we will engage in piranha fishing using traditional fishing rods—an exciting activity for all ages! We will then experience a breathtaking sunset over Sapote Lagoon.

Back at the lodge, we will relax with a delicious dinner, followed by a nighttime jungle walk to search for giant frogs and tarantulas.

DAY 3: BIRD WATCHING & INDIGENOUS COMMUNITY VISIT
At dawn, we will begin our bird-watching experience, captivated by the enchanting sounds of the rainforest.

After breakfast, we'll set out on a boat excursion through the awe-inspiring Amazon jungle, navigating lagoons and creeks upriver. This will be another opportunity to spot a diverse array of bird species and monkeys.

The Tamshiyacu-Tahuayo Regional Conservation Area is a protected natural reserve in Loreto. We will visit the San Juan de Yanayacu Community, where you will learn about their customs and traditions. During the high-water season, this indigenous village adapts by living in floating houses and using canoes as their primary means of transportation.

We will return to the lodge for lunch and a well-deserved rest.

In the afternoon, we will continue our adventure in search of the unique prehistoric-looking bird known as the Hoatzin or "Shansho," a fascinating tropical bird that inhabits the Amazon River swamps. After this incredible experience, we will return to our charming eco-lodge in the heart of the Peruvian jungle, where we will enjoy a delightful dinner.

At night, we will embark on our final canoe excursion to listen to the mesmerizing nighttime sounds of the jungle.

DAY 4: RIVER EXCURSION & JOURNEY’S END
We will begin our final day with a delicious breakfast.

Then, we will take a canoe or, if preferred, a kayak, for an excursion through the lakes and lagoons of the Yanayacu River, continuing our wildlife observation.

You will have some leisure time to relax in the hammocks at the bungalows or take a swim in the Yanayacu River before enjoying our final lunch at this exquisite lodge.

Ultimately, we will commence our three-hour return journey to the Iquitos airport or your hotel in the city.

It generally does not include flights to/from Iquitos, alcoholic beverages, tips, personal expenses, travel insurance, or any unspecified services. This Amazonian ecotourism tour focuses on nature, river culture, and wildlife photography, making it ideal for travelers seeking an authentic Amazonian experience.

The most convenient way is to fly to Iquitos (daily flights from Lima). The tour operator will meet you at the airport or your hotel, transfer you to the port, and you'll board a speedboat to the Tamshiyacu-Tahuayo Amazon Lodge. The journey along the Amazon River and its tributaries usually takes 3–4 hours, depending on the river level, season, and weather. It's recommended to arrive in Iquitos in the morning to catch the boat; if your flight arrives late, it's advisable to spend the night in the city. The return trip follows a similar process. Travel with soft, lightweight luggage; the staff will assist you throughout the transfer.

For a comfortable trip to the Amazon, pack lightweight, quick-drying clothing, long-sleeved shirts and long pants (in neutral colors), a raincoat or poncho, a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen. A good insect repellent (DEET or icaridin), a headlamp, a reusable water bottle, a waterproof backpack or dry bag, and a power bank for your devices are essential. Include personal medications and a basic first-aid kit. Rubber boots are usually available at the lodge (confirm sizes); add closed-toe shoes and sandals. Pack a swimsuit and a microfiber towel. Bring cash in soles for local purchases and tips. Cell phone/Wi-Fi signal can be limited; prioritize practical luggage.

The Amazon tour is conducted with certified local guides, safety protocols, life jackets while navigating, and briefings before each activity. For travel health, it is recommended to consult your doctor in advance about the yellow fever vaccine and boosters (such as tetanus), as well as the advisability of malaria prophylaxis based on your medical history and the season. Use strong insect repellent, wear long sleeves at dusk, and stay well hydrated. Inform us of any allergies or special dietary requirements before booking. Purchase travel insurance with medical and evacuation coverage. Mosquito nets and a basic first-aid kit are usually available at the lodge. Respect the wildlife and follow the guide's instructions for a safe and responsible experience.

The Amazon offers year-round experiences. During high water (December–May), the flooded forest allows for more navigation through lakes and streams, and excellent bird and wildlife viewing from a canoe. During low water (June–November), there are more hikes along trails, river beaches, and good conditions for piranha fishing and photography. The typical itinerary includes monkey, sloth, and pink river dolphin sightings, nighttime caiman watching, interpretive hikes, boat/canoe trips, responsible visits to riverside communities, and, depending on conditions, kayaking. The operator adjusts excursions according to weather and river levels to maximize the ecotourism experience in the Tamshiyacu-Tahuayo Regional Conservation Area.
