Tour Description

DAY 1: OLLANTAYTAMBO TO MACHU PICCHU: At the scheduled time, embark on the train journey to Aguas Calientes from the Ollantaytambo train station, leading you to one of the Seven Wonders of the World. After a scenic one-and-a-half-hour train ride, you'll arrive at the Aguas Calientes station, where our team will greet you and escort you to your hotel. Later, enjoy a brief orientation session about the Machu Picchu tour at your hotel, preparing you for the adventure ahead.

Situated in the Sacred Valley of the Incas within the province of Urubamba, Machu Picchu is part of a protected area under the National System of Protected Areas. At an elevation of 2,438 meters above sea level, the Machu Picchu altitude offers a warm and humid climate during the day, cooling off at night.

This enchanting location is home to native forests with species like cedar and boasts over 400 types of orchids and other vibrant flowers such as begonias. You might even spot the fascinating Gallito de las Rocas, Peru's national bird, among the rich wildlife here.

Machu Picchu town is a quaint village perfect for a leisurely stroll. For those interested in local crafts and textiles, a charming market awaits. Additionally, you can choose to visit the hot springs (optional), an ideal spot for relaxation.

Hotel accommodation in Aguas Calientes is not included.

DAY 2: MACHU PICCHU TO CUSCO: Begin your day with the opportunity to witness the sunrise over Machu Picchu. Board the bus for a 30-minute ascent along a winding road, offering breathtaking views of the Urubamba River and its canyon. The awe-inspiring Machu Picchu, meaning “Old Mountain”, will captivate you with its terraces, ceremonial shrines, steps, and urban areas, surrounded by an invigorating energy.

This archaeological marvel is divided into two sections. The agricultural zone, featuring expansive terraces and platforms, and the urban area, where significant religious events took place. The Inca Empire, which rose from the Peruvian highlands in the early 13th century, reached its zenith before the demise of Inca Atahualpa in 1533.

Constructed in 1450 A.D. under the reign of Inca Pachacutec, the Citadel of Machu Picchu was a crucial urban and religious hub for the Incan Empire, the largest civilization of the pre-Columbian era. Its inhabitants were primarily engaged in agriculture, crafting platforms to cultivate their sustenance.

One of the most immersive ways to delve into the lifestyle of the Incan ancestors is by trekking the Inca Trail. The Inca Trail to Machu Picchu remains a top outdoor adventure for visitors in Cusco.

Following a guided tour lasting two and a half hours, you'll have ample time to either continue exploring Machu Picchu independently or, if you wish, embark on a climb up the Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountains (optional).

Alternatively, you can choose to return by bus to Aguas Calientes for lunch (optional). The town offers excellent restaurants serving delicious Peruvian cuisine.

At the designated time, board the train back to Ollantaytambo, followed by a tourist bus ride to Cusco, where you'll be dropped off at your hotel in the historical center of Cusco.

Meals not mentioned, tips, and personal expenses are not usually included.

Typical full-day itinerary: Early morning pick-up from your Cusco hotel, transfer to the train station (Ollantaytambo or Poroy depending on the season), scenic train ride (1.5 to 3.5 hours) to Aguas Calientes, 25-30 minute bus ride to the entrance, and a 2-3 hour guided tour of the Machu Picchu archaeological site. Free time for photos and return by bus and train in the afternoon or evening, with final transfer back to your hotel. Alternative 2-day, 1-night option: Overnight stay in Aguas Calientes to enter at dawn or visit Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain.

The best time to visit Machu Picchu is usually during the dry season, from May to September, with clear skies ideal for photography, although there is higher demand and prices are higher. The shoulder months of April and October combine good weather with fewer tourists. The rainy season runs from November to March: you'll find fewer people and potential deals, but you should expect showers, fog, and delays. In February, the classic Inca Trail is usually closed for maintenance, without affecting access by train. To avoid crowds, enter during the early morning hours or in the afternoon and book in advance.

We recommend bringing your original passport, train and bus tickets, and entrance tickets, non-slip trekking shoes, layered clothing, a waterproof jacket or poncho, a hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, insect repellent, a reusable water bottle, and snacks. Bring cash in soles for local purchases. The trek requires moderate effort: there are many stairs and uneven surfaces. Cusco is at 3,400 m (10,000 ft); acclimatize 1 to 2 days beforehand. Machu Picchu is located at 2,430 m (8,000 ft), which reduces but does not eliminate altitude sickness. Trekking poles with rubber tips are permitted with restrictions. Avoid large backpacks, drones, and tripods; consider travel insurance.

The price of a tour to Machu Picchu varies depending on the season, ticket availability, train type (standard or panoramic), private or shared service, and whether it includes lunch, bus, and hotel. To book, provide your name as it appears on your passport, your desired date, and a secure payment method. During peak season, it's advisable to book 2 to 4 months in advance. Tickets are non-refundable and, according to local regulations, are usually non-transferable. Changes and cancellations may incur penalties and depend on train and entry time availability. On the day of your trip, you must present a valid passport and arrive with plenty of time.
