Tour Description

DAY 1

Our journey begins bright and early, departing from your hotel in Cusco and heading towards the charming Andean village of Paucartambo, located 68 miles from the city at an elevation of 2,906 meters above sea level.

The Manu National Reserve spans across the regions of Cusco and Madre de Dios. Established as a protected area in 1963, this lush jungle is divided into three key zones: the cultural zone, the reserved zone, and the restricted use zone. The latter is the most safeguarded area, designated for scientific research and biological studies.

Our route continues down to the Cloud Forest, with a scheduled stop for lunch. Here, you'll begin to notice a warmer climate enveloped by verdant vegetation.

After taking in the magnificent scenery, we'll arrive at our lodge situated within the cultural zone of Manu, at an altitude of 1,700 meters. Here, you'll enjoy a well-earned rest and a delectable dinner, included in your stay.

If you wish, you can explore the area by walking along the trails surrounding the lodge, accompanied by a professional guide.

DAY 2

Early in the morning, we'll set out in search of the renowned Andean Cock of the Rock, the national bird of Peru. After this unforgettable experience, we'll return to the lodge for breakfast before proceeding to the town of Pilcopata.

At this juncture, you have the option of engaging in rafting on the Koñeq or Alto Madre de Dios rivers, enjoying an hour and a half of exhilarating adventure with Class I and II rapids.

Our journey continues to the port of Atalaya, situated at 700 meters above sea level, where we'll board a boat to travel downriver to our next lodge. Along the way, you'll witness the unique and stunning flora and fauna, including various bird species like herons and vultures.

We can take a leisurely walk around the lodge to appreciate the splendor of the Peruvian jungle. At night, we have the opportunity to explore the area for nocturnal wildlife, including insects and amphibians.

The rustic lodge features a network of trails spanning 15 kilometers, which you can explore with a professional guide. All meals are included on this day.

DAY 3

On this final day in Manu, we'll embark on a boat excursion to the Collpa, a clay lick on the riverbank where a wide variety of bird species gather each morning to consume the nutrient-rich clay.

The Biosphere Reserve of Manu boasts an astonishing array of wildlife, with the highest biodiversity on the planet. You'll have the opportunity to observe animals in their natural setting, including endangered species like the giant otter and black caiman.

This remarkable national reserve encompasses diverse ecosystems, from mountainous regions at elevations of 4,000 meters to the lowlands of the Amazon basin.

We will return to the lodge to board the boat back to the port of Atalaya. Once we arrive, our transportation will take us back to the city of Cusco. This day includes breakfast at the lodge and lunch en route to Cusco.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Manu tour typically includes round-trip transfers from Cusco, combined vehicle and boat transportation on the Madre de Dios or Alto Madre de Dios River, accommodation in an eco-lodge, full board (breakfast, lunch, and dinner), purified water, a bilingual naturalist guide, interpretive hikes, boat trips and wildlife viewing, and basic equipment such as rubber boots and a poncho. Entrance fees to private reserves and observation towers are usually included. Flights, alcoholic or bottled beverages, extra snacks, tips, personal expenses, and travel insurance are not included. Optional activities or upgrades may incur additional costs. Please review your voucher and confirmed itinerary.

For this excursion to the Peruvian Amazon, the dry season (May to October) offers the best conditions: less rain, more stable rivers, and a greater chance of wildlife sightings. The rainy season (November to April) features lush rainforest, less dust, and dramatic skies, but also heavy downpours, slippery trails, and itinerary changes. The climate is warm and humid, with average temperatures between 20 and 32°C (68 and 90°F); nights can be cooler in cloud forest areas. Pack a lightweight raincoat and sun protection. If you are traveling during peak season (July-August), book your tour package and lodge in advance to ensure availability.

For a comfortable and safe trip to Manu, pack a soft backpack, lightweight quick-drying clothing, long pants, long-sleeved shirts, a waterproof jacket, trekking boots or rubber boots, sandals, a hat, sunglasses, insect repellent, sunscreen, a headlamp, batteries or a power bank, binoculars, a reusable water bottle, and a dry bag for your gear. Bring cash in soles and your passport. Travel insurance is recommended. Health authorities suggest considering the yellow fever vaccine and consulting about malaria prophylaxis; ask your healthcare professional for guidance. Inform the tour operator about any food allergies or special dietary requirements before the tour.

The journey from Cusco to Manu National Park typically combines road and river travel. The first leg takes you through Andean valleys and cloud forest with scenic stops and lasts approximately 7–9 hours, depending on traffic and weather. Then, from the port (e.g., Atalaya), you'll board a motorized boat for a 1–2 hour ride downstream to your jungle lodge. The typical itinerary includes day and night hikes, birdwatching, visits to oxbow lakes, a canopy tower, and a possible macaw clay lick at dawn. The return trip follows the same route. Tour schedules and activities may be adjusted based on river levels, rainfall, and operational safety.

Authorized operators prioritize safety: briefings before each activity, life jackets on boats, local guides trained in first aid, first-aid kits, radio or satellite communication, and protocols for weather-related risks. Always follow the guidelines for responsible ecotourism. Wildlife sightings are natural and not guaranteed, but Manu National Park offers high biodiversity: macaws, toucans, hoatzins, howler and capuchin monkeys, capybaras, caimans, and, with luck, giant otters or felines. The best times are at dawn and dusk. Bring 8x42 binoculars and a camera with a telephoto lens. Remain silent, maintain a safe distance, and do not feed the animals.
